Alex Nigg
Executive in Residence
Alex joins Morgenthaler Ventures Menlo Park office with twenty years experience as an entrepreneur and advisor to startups and multinationals, and a successful track record as a VC. At Morgenthaler, his particular area of focus is fintech and software and services for SMBs (small and medium businesses); in the past his investments have spanned from consumer Internet to enterprise software and telecommunications.
Alex started his career as a management consultant at Bain & Company’s San Francisco office. He then led investments and business development for the Silicon Valley-based corporate venture capital fund of Telecom Italia. Next, he led the North American investments of Europatweb, a global venture capital fund with operations in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. At Europatweb, Alex led the investment teams in New York and San Francisco, and co-led two global investment sectors. The North American teams’ early stage investments generated three exits with market caps in excess of $1 billion. These investment include Betfair, one of the most successful European venture-backed companies to date, where Alex led Europatweb’s lead investment in the company’s A round.
Alex is also a co-founder of Walkwire, a provider of business centers to the hospitality industry, which he managed through a decade of profitability and successfully sold in 2012. He co-founded Siderian Ventures, where he advises a broad range of clients ranging from startups to multinationals, and which he continues to lead in addition to his responsibilities at Morgenthaler.
In addition to Betfair (LSE: BET), Alex sponsored investments in Excite Italia (acquired by Tiscali), Transactive Solutions (acquired by Bertelsmann), and Quios (stake acquired by Vivendi). He has held five board seats and is currently an advisor to Anki and Jakala Promoplan.
